From perfume, for the color of your shirt, right as a result of the smelliness of the feet, mosquitoes appear to find any reason to sink themselves into human skin.
Scientists point out that stinky feet and socks may be added to a list of things that attract 腳臭 to feed off human blood. One African scientist is currently using that little bit of research to assist fight malaria in Tanzania by creating traps that offer off, trying to lure the bloodsuckers that carry the condition to their hosts.
“Scientists have known for a long period that mosquitoes smell people; which they will not see us, but instead they smell us,” wrote Dr. Fredros Okumu within an email from Tanzania where he heads the studies project with the Ifakara Health Institute. “It is the items that we produce in our breath, sweat of skin that [mosquitoes] use being a signal to discover us. So if you are wearing socks, these skin-derived chemicals stay on the sock fabric and can nonetheless be detected by mosquitoes even once you have removed your socks.”
Okumu’s project received a $775,000 grant today from your Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada to finance the traps and help further development.
But unclean feet and dirty socks aren’t the only real items that entice a mosquito to look in for the kill. Experts point out that Limburger cheese has also been found to get appealing to certain mosquito populations. Ned Walker, a professor within the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University, studies mosquitoes extensively. Walker said that everything from body build to the particular perfume you wear can be the distinction between deterring and attracting the pests.
“You will find a variation among attraction to different people … Men are certainly more attractive mainly because they tend to be larger than women,” said Walker, adding that the floral scents given off by deodorants and perfumes also attract some species of mosquitoes for the skin.
However, determining why some individuals leave a picnic covered in bites while some escape with no battle wound continues to be up for debate.
“There are a few [species] that are popular with the odors in humans. But what we would like to know is the reason some mosquitoes are fascinated by birds rather than mammals, to many subsets of humans yet not all humans. It is really an active section of research,” said Walker.
Joe Conlon, technical adviser at the American Mosquito Control Association, said genetics and also fair skin might also be involved in popular with mosquitoes, although scientists remain dexrpky21 if the bites are simply more noticeable on individuals with fair skin.
And although fair skin is much more appealing to the insects, lighter colors of clothing turn them off.
“It’s prudent to wear in light-colored clothing. There exists a preference by some species to become fascinated by darker colors… Wear loose fitting clothing. Mosquitoes will bite through tight-fitting clothing,” he stated.
Conlon said that the sole surefire way of preventing from biting is always to wear a repellant, to look at what clothes you wear and to eradicate standing water that collects in places like at the bases of flower pots and in the bottom of air-con drip pans.
He also cautioned against using any substitutes to 除臭襪 like vitamin B, proclaiming that double blind tests have proven these remedies to never work effectively.
“Most of the time, everyone is not fearful enough. With West Nile Virus falling the radar, individuals are less concerned. … People need to [know] they cannot just ruin your picnic, they may ruin your daily life,” said Conlon.
